Summer Sports & STEAM Camp
At our private school in Washington State, students thrive in an IB World School that blends academic excellence with innovation, global awareness, and genuine care. They question, create, and connect with peers from diverse cultures. Students spark their curiosity through a rigorous IB curriculum, strong core subjects, and engaging specialist classes. They build confidence in small, supportive communities and prepare to succeed at leading secondary schools. Rooted in Bellevue’s vibrant cultural landscape and part of International Schools Partnership, students become part of a global community with big ambitions.Â
School founded
Bellevue Children’s Academy was founded by visionary educator Yuka Shimizu, first opening as an afterschool learning center. From the beginning, BCA focused on nurturing curious, advanced learners and building strong foundations in core skills.Â
Afterschool center becomes day school
BCA grew into a full day school, expanding its program to serve Pre-K to 4th Grade students. With a strong emphasis on math and phonics, the school quickly became known for its rigorous academics and warm, supportive environment.Â
Willows Preparatory School opens
To meet the needs of students beyond elementary years, the BCA team opened Willows Preparatory School in 2014 on a 15-acre campus in Redmond. This new school extends the BCA approach into Middle and High School, preparing students for future success.Â
IB World School accreditation
Bellevue Children’s Academy became an IB World School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP), embedding inquiry-based, internationally minded learning across Preschool to 4th grade. Students now grow as confident, caring global citizens, ready for whatever comes next.Â

Students learn to reflect on their strengths and next steps, while families see clear evidence of improvement in reading and math. In AY24–25, 96% of students met or exceeded year‑end reading benchmarks, and over 65% of families cited “academic progress” as the top reason for staying at BCA (NPS 2025). Together with their teachers, students set ambitious goals, track their own journey and celebrate growth, building confidence as they move forward.Â
Students rise to above‑grade‑level challenge from Grade 1. BCA identifies and groups students for accelerated math and reading, so they work with content that stretches their thinking and keeps them engaged.Â
Using internal benchmarks and MAP testing, students see how their progress compares to national averages and take pride in achieving 1.8Ă— the national average growth in both Reading and Math (AY24–25). By facing demanding material early, they build resilience, strong study habits and the confidence to tackle advanced learning in the years ahead.Â
Students grow as curious, globally aware thinkers in BCA’s international community. Guided by the IB Learner Profile, they practice being inquirers, thinkers and caring citizens every day.Â
Students learn to ask thoughtful questions, consider multiple perspectives and reflect on their own actions. Coming from multilingual and international backgrounds, they develop strong communication skills and genuine cross‑cultural understanding. With curiosity, resilience and empathy at the heart of their learning, students are prepared to engage with the wider world with confidence.Â
Students prepare intentionally for top Middle Schools from their earliest years at BCA. In every classroom, they experience high expectations and carefully differentiated instruction that keeps them appropriately stretched.Â
Academic differentiation is built into daily lessons, ensuring every child experiences stretch and challenge. As a result, 97% of BCA Grade 4 students are accepted into top‑tier Middle Schools, both local and international. Along the way, students practice the skills that selective schools value most: independence, critical thinking and strong communication. By Grade 4, they’re ready to transition with confidence, carrying the strong academic foundations they’ve built at BCA.Â
Students build real‑world skills through STEAM learning and discover growth with project‑based learning. They design and lead projects around questions and issues that matter to them, working in teams to research, create and present their findings.Â
More than 40% of students lead their own project before Grade 3, showing that confidence, teamwork and leadership start early at BCA. Along the way, students practice collaboration, problem‑solving and public speaking, learning how to share their ideas clearly with different audiences. By taking ownership of their projects from start to finish, they develop persistence, creativity and leadership skills that extend far beyond the classroom.Â
Students step into leadership from a young age. Starting in Grade 1, they assume roles such as Library Monitors, Student Council members and Class Leaders, contributing to a school‑wide culture of initiative and ownership.Â
In these roles, students make decisions, support their peers and help shape daily school life. They learn that their ideas matter and that their actions can make a positive difference in their community. Over time, they grow as confident communicators and empathetic leaders who are ready to take on bigger responsibilities.Â
Students explore their talents and interests from the very start of their BCA journey. From Preschool onward, they participate in specialist‑taught Music, Art, PE, Coding and Spanish, discovering what they enjoy and where they excel.Â
Enrichment is treated as core, not extra. Early exposure to creative, physical and technical disciplines helps students build confidence, curiosity and a wide range of skills. As they move through the grades, they keep stretching their strengths and discovering new passions in a supportive, high‑expectation environment.Â
Students connect learning to real contexts through vibrant cultural. Each year, they participate in bilingual drama performances and community projects that bring classroom learning to life.Â
Language learning is closely connected to this international community. Students engage with Spanish not only through structured lessons but also through cultural exploration, conversations, and real-life contexts.Â
By stepping onto a stage, presenting a prototype or serving their community, students practice creativity, collaboration and public speaking in authentic settings. Around 85% of students join at least one enrichment or leadership activity each year, building confidence and a strong sense of belonging while they apply their learning beyond the classroom.Â
