Celebrating multilingualism

At our private school in Bellevue, students grow in a rich, multilingual environment that inspires early language development and cultural awareness. Spanish instruction begins in Kindergarten and continues through 4th grade, while preschoolers new to English quickly start speaking their first words.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Grades 2-4

Kindergarten and Grade 1

In Kindergarten and Grade 1, children begin their Spanish language journey by building a strong and joyful foundation. Students actively explore the Spanish alphabet, practice phonetic sounds, and develop clear pronunciation through songs, games, and guided activities. They learn high-frequency vocabulary and start forming simple sentences while becoming familiar with basic grammar structures.

Through daily practice, students gain confidence using Spanish in meaningful ways, listening, speaking, and responding naturally. Children engage with the language in a supportive environment that encourages curiosity, participation, and a love for learning Spanish from the very beginning.

Grades 2-4

In Grades 2 through 4, students strengthen and expand their Spanish skills by reviewing core concepts and building upon them each year. Children actively increase their vocabulary, improve sentence structure, and deepen their understanding of grammar while using Spanish in more complete and expressive ways.

Student's connect with the language through songs, conversations, cultural traditions, and historical topics. They practice real-life communication and learn to recognize Spanish beyond the classroom, especially when they travel or encounter the language in everyday situations. By engaging with Spanish in authentic and interactive ways, students develop confidence, cultural awareness, and practical language skills.

Structured language assessments

We build strong, confident communicators through a structured progression of literacy experiences from Preschool to Elementary, that develop reading, writing and language skills while steadily strengthening resilience and independence.

Preschool

In Preschool, children build foundational literacy through fun, age-appropriate activities. Teachers introduce one letter per week, teaching recognition, case matching, and sounds, with regular review. Progress is gently assessed via observations, interactions, simple questions, checklists, and student work, keeping learning positive and low-pressure.

Pre-K

In Pre-K, literacy grows through structured units, with end-of-unit assessments measuring skill and readiness. Children practice letter recognition, sounds, vowel/consonant distinctions, phoneme isolation, and blending. Instruction advances from single letters to CVC words, sight words, and early reading, with visual cues and prompts supporting learning.

Elementary

In Grades K–4, HMH Into Reading guides English language assessment through data-driven cycles. Weekly formative tests in spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension track progress, while Amira monitors fluency digitally. End-of-module and semester summative assessments, alongside standardized tests, measure mastery and guide targeted support for EAL/ESL learners.

When children feel seen and supported by familiar adults, they gain confidence and a strong sense of belonging.
